Mykonos

Arrived at the island of Mykonos in the Aegean Sea and anchored by 6:30am. A partly sunny day with temperature up to 23C today. 4 other ships here so a busy day. Ashore by tender around 7:30am for a tour out to the island of Delos. Transferred to the full Delos ferry for the 30 minute trip. Arrived around 9:15am on this ancient island which was first inhabited around 3000BC. It is considered to be the birth place of Apollo. Our guide today was Mando a knowledgeable young women. Today this is an uninhabited small island 5 x 1.3kms. It is still an archeological site and a UNESCO world heritage tourist destination. There were numerous tour groups on the Island, so was busy but still interesting to see the ruins. One part was the remains of old sanctuary guarded by the terrace of lions which are a symbol of power and royalty. The other side was the remains of the old Hellenistic town with houses, columns and mosaics to be seen. The Romans came here around the 3rd century AD and built the 5000 spectator theatre. We also visited the museum with various artifacts and some of the lions. Left the Island at 11am for the 30 minute boat trip back to Mykonos. Walked back round the bay to the catch the tender.
