Bath-Day2

Friday morning in Bath on an overcast, damp start to the day with 18c temperature. Clearing by 11am so we walked into the town centre on a mission to find Marks & Spencer. Having found it and done our shopping we walked back up through the main street and finally stopped at Café Nero for a lunchtime coffee. Headed back, passing the Bath cricket ground on the way where there was a match in progress. Explaining cricket is not an easy task!! In the afternoon I headed back into the city to explore more. The weather now clearing but still mainly cloudy with temperature around 20c. Headed out the other side of town and came to the Circus. This  is a historic ring of large townhouses forming a circle with three entrances. Designed by architect John Wood it was built between 1754 and 1768, and is regarded as a pre-eminent example of Georgian architecture. From here it was a short walk to Royal Crescent with its famous row of houses on the edge of the park. The Royal Crescent is a row of 30 terraced houses laid out in a sweeping crescent, designed by the architect John Wood, and built between 1767 and 1774 it is among the greatest examples of Georgian Architecture to be found in the United Kingdom. Although some changes have been made to the various interiors over the years, the Georgian stone facade remains much as it was when first built. Passing this I entered Victoria Park and wandered through, eventually arriving at the botanical gardens. Spent some time walking through and looking at the various trees and plants. Returning to town I came to Pulteney bridge over the Avon. Pulteney Bridge was completed by 1774 and connected the city with land in Bathwick which Sir William Pulteney and his family wished to develop. Designed by Robert Adam in a Palladian style, it is one of only four bridges in the world to have shops across its full span on both sides. Crossing this I then went down to the riverside and walked along observing the weir. Finally crossed back over and arrived at our B&B. In the evening we went to Portofino seafood restaurant for dinner.

Highlight of the day: Botanical gardens
